Tax Solutions Intern

June - August 2018 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the overall culture of the firm. They really welcome you with open arms and it truly is a jerk-free zone. One thing Plante Moran does with their interns is that while you're working you don't feel like an intern. I really got a taste of what it would be like to be a full-time employee day in and day out. I was able to spend time doing the tax solutions work but also got to experience some assurance work as well, which gave me a full rounded perspective and really helped me decide that Tax is where I want to be. Furthermore, I was lucky enough to spend some time traveling to different cities and even states on some overnight business trips that further gave me an idea of the type of work I will continue to be doing when I go back to start full- time. Lastly, during the internship, the firm puts on wonderful events where everyone gets to come together to have fun, meet new people, and congratulate the people that got promotions. I got to learn tons about what type of people and culture Plante Moran really is.

What I wish was different

When I was done with my internship and had my exit interview with my HR she asked me what I wish would have been different. I really can't think of much, there were so many highlights and so much experience I gained from being able to have this opportunity. The only thing I could think of was that I wish I could have done some Tax returns, but since it was a summer internship it just wasn't the right time to do that sort of work.

Advice

My advice is that don't be afraid to take on new challenges and opportunities even if they seem challenging at first or not what you thought you might want to do. I didn't know I would end up in Tax Solutions, but I am so happy that I took the opportunity when it was presented to me.

What I liked

From the very start, everyone was very open for any questions and was very nice to talk to. Everyone from all levels in the company are there for you to succeed no matter what it is and that was very nice to have. You get so many client experiences in the field. Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend!

What I wish was different

I didn't receive too much feedback from my work and I would've loved to hear what I need to work on and things of that nature.

Advice

Always say yes to any experience you get offered and don't be afraid to reach out to someone who you have never met before.

What I liked

I loved the real-life experience that I got during my summer internship. I got to work with different clients, travel to different cities, and work with several audit teams. I loved the culture of the firm and my team. My team was really friendly and was always open to help me with any challenges that I had. It gave me a really great idea of what auditors do and how they work in audit engagements. I also really liked the events that the firm organized. I got to meet new people, have fun, and hear some incredible experiences.

What I wish was different

I wish I had to do more tax work but it was not the right time.

Advice

Assurance Intern

June - August 2018 • Schaumburg, IL

What I liked

Plante Moran did well showing interns what a career in public accounting is like. We were kept busy and always had opportunities to learn something new. They also got interns into client locations for fieldwork and treated them as entry level associates.

What I wish was different

The location I was at is in the suburbs which is not ideal and would have rather been in the downtown Chicago office.

Advice

Go into your internship open minded and ask questions. This is the time to learn and ask. Also be honest if you do not know how to do something, pretending you know will only come back and get you later. But have fun and be yourself, half of the internship is figuring out if you fit in with the culture and could see yourself enjoying working there.

Tax Accounting Intern

June - August 2018 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I loved everything about my internship. The people who work at the firm made me feel welcomed right away and were always so helpful whenever I had any questions. The company itself truly does care about its employees and goes out of its way to make sure their employees enjoy where they work, which I did. I had such a good experience interning for Plante Moran that I find myself bragging about the firm almost every day. I would recommend this firm to anyone interested in public accounting.

What I wish was different

Nothing, my internship was everything I wanted it to be and so much more!

Advice

Be confident in who you are and be yourself in interviews and everything else will fall into place. The public accounting world is very competitive when it comes to internships. Not only do you want to let the firm know you are a good fit for them, but you want to make sure the firm is a good fit for you and who you are. Be true to yourself and make sure you know what you are looking for in an employer.
