Financial Auditor

August 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

Deloitte is a great place to start your career. The work is challenging and there is a steep learning curve, but everyone is invested in your success.

What I wish was different

Be proactive in your job search as soon as possible. There is a strict timeline for recruitment in Public Accounting. The earlier you can get exposed to accounting firms the better. I recommend joining as many accounting clubs as you can (while keeping your GPA stable) and attend the events that they host. Accounting clubs will serve as the main pipeline for students looking to work in Public Accounting.

Advice

GPA is important for the Big 4, but it is not the only factor. Being able to network effectively, and standing out with extracurriculars (jobs, clubs, volunteering) are equally important in securing an interview.

Audit & Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I liked how structured the intern program was. From the first day to the last, there was always a clear agenda and we knew what was expected of us. There were also many opportunities to network with seniors, managers, and partners at the company. I enjoyed getting to work with 39 other people my age who had similar skill sets to me, but still pushed me to grow. My internship provided great insight into the corporate culture of Deloitte and made me excited for what's to come.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been an option to do a rotation program where we worked in audit, tax, and consulting.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice would be to talk to as many people as possible. I set up coffee and lunch meeting with employees twice a week just to hear about their experience and the steps they took to get there. Ultimately, doing this led me to switch from an audit intern to a full time position in tax.

Risk & Financial Advisory Intern

June - August 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I absolutely loved the culture at Deloitte. The people are what make it so amazing, and truly what gave me an incredible experience. The work is refreshing and new since I was able to see multiple clients, but the teams at every client are what make the experience so great. Deloitte is an amazing place to work and I am honored to have had two internships there, and a full-time offer when I graduate.

What I wish was different

The only difference I would have liked is seeing more work in a different offering they have that I am interested in. It was not until the end that I discovered an interest, so I will most likely be able to experience that when I start working full-time.

Advice

Network, network, network. Deloitte is all about meeting new people and building business relationships with the people around you. It is really important to know people all around in order to better your team and your own work. Take advantage of the time you have with people high up, such as PPMD's (Partner, Principal, Managing Director). They love to share their story and they are full of insight. They also want the best for you and are more than happy to help you reach your goals.

GPS Contracts Intern

June 2019 • Arlington County, VA

What I liked

The flexibility to work remote and to continue my internship through my Fall semester was the what I liked most out of my internship with Deloitte. Additionally, we had the opportunity to explore Deloitte University for a few days, which was an amazing experience and truly enriching.

What I wish was different

The assignments given were administrative at times. I wish the job was more focused within my major of finance, but it was a rewarding experience nonetheless.

Advice

The brand recognition of Deloitte on my resume has helped me in the job applying/interviewing process! Deloitte has been an amazing place to work, learn, and network with professionals in the industry.

Discovery Intern

June - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

This was an amazing opportunity to explore two sides of accounting, audit and tax. Through this internship, I got to meet a lot of amazing professionals and work with many different teams. Ultimately, it helped me decide that the Tax side of accounting is the one for me.

What I wish was different

A third rotation with advisory would have been great to see if I liked that side of accounting, but with only eight weeks to divided between three service lines can be difficult.

Advice

Talk to as many professionals as possible! While the work itself is important, getting to know the people that you will be working with in the future is crucial. They have been through the same process and have a lot of knowledge to share.

Audit Intern

July 2020 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

If you want to get an accounting internship, do the Early Recruitment Program (formerly the Matching Program). It is the absolute best way to network with different accounting firms. It also makes the entire interview process a lot easier because all of the firms are on the same timeline. You will not have a situation where you have a deadline to accept an internship that falls before you have heard back from a different employer.
