Summer Advisory Intern

June - August 2017 • Shanghai, China

What I liked

I worked in a Chinese corporate office environment which was very exciting and interesting. One of my main goals in going to China was to improve my Chinese in different contexts outside the classroom. Working at Grant Thornton enabled me to practice in a professional business environment which was a great opportunity. The Shanghai financial district is also incredibly unique and demonstrated what living and working in a city would be like after college.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more involved in financial operations.

Advice

Your internship is what you make of it. Come in with certain goals and make sure you portray these to your supervisor prior to the start of your internship. Do not be afraid to ask if you can work on different things within the firm, it cannot hurt and shows initiative.

Tax Intern

June - August 2019 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I got experience preparing lots of different types of taxes - a good variety of real work. I also really liked all the people in the office. I'm super excited to be returning as a Tax Associate in Fall 2020!

What I wish was different

During the summer the work can be a little slower for interns, so there were some days I didn't have much to help with.

Advice

Recruiting for accounting jobs and internships starts early - be ready! And don't be deterred if you don't get an offer from Fall recruiting - I didn't, and I still ended up with a great internship that led to a full-time position.

Audit Intern

June - August 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Experience hands-on auditing work. Learning the process

What I wish was different

The work environment was kind of cold at times. I have had internships where at least one-two people who consistently checked on how I was progressing and adjusting to the environment. It wasn't the same here.

Advice

I used this opportunity to evaluate what type of environment I want to be in. I also paid close attention to performance evaluations to see if there was anything professionally, or skillfully, to improve.

Tax Intern

January - April 2018 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I loved the hands on experience that I got. I was able to see what I would actually be doing in the real world. I learned so much in such little time. It was challenging which I really enjoyed. The people were so helpful and eager to help me learn and be comfortable.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change a thing!

Advice

I would say to definitely make use of the resources on campus because that is how I got the internship experience I did. I would also say to give it your all and enjoy the learning experience.

The learning opportunities are endless. The schedule is rigorous, but you’ll learn more in a month than you’ve learned in the past year in a classroom.

June 2017 - August 2018 • Alexandria, VA

What I liked

It was a very hands-on internship that threw me right into a role on a team. People were fantastic. Work was moderately interesting

What I wish was different

As a developer, I wish there were some more experienced members on the team I could have directly learned from. Developer's weren't onsite with me, so it made communication a bit difficult.

Advice

Find ways you can make an impact right off the jump.

Accountant

October 2018 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I really like the fast paced enviornment. The smaller feel of the firm makes it feel like a community. I aslo like that we have a global reach and work closely with other offices in the western region .

What I wish was different

I wish the start date had been a little earlier. I wish also that I had realized how how of a turniver rate accounting firms have.

Advice

Don't base you decison based on the people in the firm. Base it on the culture and resources the firm has to offer. Also if at all possible, I highly recommend interning at more then one firm.

Risk Advisory Intern

July 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I got to get to know the advisory group I would be working with really well, whether through simple Q&A sessions, shadows, or happy hour game nights. Although we were able to accomplish and learn a lot about our service lines over the two weeks, we had a lot of fun too! We were able to network with national and local leadership, learning about the diverse company culture and how GT prioritizes DEI.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have been in person!

Advice

Networking online can be a little awkward but just embrace it! Everyone is going through the same things and facing similar challenges, so just put yourself out there and try your best! Good things will come.

cyber security intern

June - July 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Being able to connect with other fellow interns my age

Audit Intern (Public Sector)

June - August 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The firm provides many great resources to its employees, and as an intern, I was given engaging and rewarding work. I enjoyed working on my engagement team and being able to contribute to the audit.

What I wish was different

Three of the eight weeks of the internship were spent in training, most of which were self-paced and lacked relevance to my job responsibilities. I felt like this time could have been utilized far more efficiently and effectively.

Advice

Stay engaged and don't be afraid to reach out to people within the firm. Most are happy to speak with you and greatly appreciate you taking initiative whether it's looking for work to do or just asking them about themselves and their career.

Accountant Intern

June - August 2022 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

The training was only two or three days and then we were able to go directly into working on real client work. I definitely learned the most from my mistakes on the tax returns, and was able to easily see my mistake and never let it happen again. Also, I was exposed to many different scenarios with client work between individual, S-corp, and partnership tax returns.

What I wish was different

My only wish is that it would have been longer than 8 weeks, I think another 2 weeks I could have learned even more.

Advice

Go into it with an outgoing personality, get to know as many people as you can, and even though you have the option to work from home, go into the office as much as you can. It shows Grant Thornton that you really care about the work you're doing.
