What I liked

Getting to work in all areas of production, make connections and be part of a team!

Don't hesitate to take initiative by asking to go on shoots, pitching ideas, and asking questions.

USA & Syfy Networks Alternative Programming & Production Intern

June - September 2019 • Universal City, CA

What I liked

The people who work in this department are incredibly passionate about what they do, and always want to hear your opinions and understanding of new reality shows (i.e. what you would watch and why, what you have watched, etc.). They always made sure that the other interns and I felt like members of the team rather than just interns!

What I wish was different

The work load can be a little light sometimes, so finding things to keep yourself busy can be difficult. But, those 'empty work' days are nice breaks when larger work with tight deadlines come in that can take a week or so to finish.

Advice

The internship is what you make of it! The office flows in its own way, and being an intern that makes yourself integral to that flow can help give you more work and more opportunities.

Scheduling and Research Intern

June - July 2019 • Universal City, CA

What I liked

My managers were very willing to teach me. Any question was welcomed and answered.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship could have lasted longer.

Advice

Internships are meant for you to connect with the employees at a company. Not necessarily for you to learn what to do it how to work. Take time to set up informational with people you find interesting or people whose positions intrigue you.

Oxygen Digital Editorial Intern

January - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked that the team trusted me to do my projects, and as I got comfortable, they challenged me with more work and assignments that were within my skill set. They were very open to me asking about what I want to learn and what I may be interested in! I grew a lot and learned so much.

What I wish was different

I guess I wish there was more structure to the job. Sometimes there were times where I wasn't entirely sure how long I should take with assignments, or I wouldn't have something to do. I also wish just in general that NBCU offers intern a day to shadow at a different department, so we could see what other people do.

Advice

Do the most. Don't do the minimum. When given an assignment, don't take forever to do it just because you're going to be at work until 6 p.m. anyways. Do assignments with vigor. They know when you're not keeping up as you should, when you're not pushing. They may not say anything, but they know. I can tell by the behaviors.

Photography Intern (Virtual)

June - August 2020 • Universal City, CA

What I liked

The NBCUniversal Internship Program provided its virtual interns with a memorable and educational experience despite the program being remote. They held many seminars, panels, and fun activities for interns to participate in over the summer. Personally, I was fortunate to have a supportive, welcoming supervisor and a team who provided me with engaging tasks and meetings with high-profile company employees. I gained invaluable knowledge about the entertainment industry from my short time with NBCUniversal that will benefit me throughout my future career.

What I wish was different

I mainly wish the program would have been in-person. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the summer program was moved to a remote setting. I was extremely disappointed, as I was greatly anticipating spending the summer in Universal City, CA and working in the NBCUniversal office. Other than this, I would not have changed anything about my internship.

Advice

Try to schedule as many informational meetings as possible. With your company email address, you have access to the entire NBCUniversal employee directory to reach out and connect with people; don't be afraid to send emails that could possibly create name recognition/familiarity. Connect with your fellow interns on LinkedIn or social media, as they could become valuable connections (and even friends!). The internship program is meant to learn new skills, build a network, and prepare students for their careers; take advantage of all the opportunities presented to you while you can.

Creative Film Music Intern

September - December 2019 • Universal City, CA

What I liked

Learning how the Film Music industry works from the inside of arguably the highest-profile company was incredible. All the after-work events, such as film screenings and work parties were great fun and amazing network opportunities. Lunches with executives and supervisors was another highlight for me. My absolute favorite part was putting together playlists for songs to potentially be used in Universal films.

What I wish was different

Perhaps I would've liked to be even more hands-on with some of the non-creative parts of the job. That couldn't really be helped since I was in the creative department, so it's a good problem.

Advice

You get what you put in. Don't ever be afraid to talk to someone at your internship. They're just people, even if they have your dream job. Always give an effort to be pleasant, because being personable is more important than anything when you're a student or intern. As in intern, you truly don't have much experience to offer, so recruiters and bosses look for someone with a heart to learn. Humility, eagerness to learn, and initiative are the most important things one can ever offer.

Development Intern

January - May 2020 • Universal City, CA

What I liked

I loved the environment, I felt very connected to the team and included.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have the entire semester in person, due to COVID it moved to remote, but I still really enjoyed my remote experience

Advice

Always communicate with your supervisors. If you have questions, try to avoid reaching out to your bosses first, and talk to some other interns or people around you to work it out yourself before bothering the busier people.

Production Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The internship program was formal and well-planned, with many opportunities for professional development.

What I wish was different

I think that the experience would have been more well-rounded with greater opportunities if it had been in person!

Advice

In any internship, but especially at NBC, make sure to reach out to employees in different apartments to have informal chats and informational interviews. You never know how they'll come into play in your future career!

Sales Planning & Content Management Intern

June - August 2022 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

My manager was great and I loved the work that I did. It was aligned with what I want to do as a career and my team let me take full ownership of pitch decks. I was also paired with a mentor who was very helpful in connecting me to other execs!

What I wish was different

I wish it was more of an in person opportunity.

Advice

Make the most of networking because there are very niche teams/roles in NBCU and it’s great to hear insight and narrow down where you may want to intern in the future! Every person I contacted randomly for an informational was happy to chat!

June 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The team was very supportive and always provided new experiences and opportunities for me to grow and work with different teams.

What I wish was different

I was working remotely and most of the team worked remotely but I would have loved to work hybrid or in-person to meet the team.
