What I liked

loved working with the kids as i am hoping for my future job to include kids. The feeling you get when the kids show their liking towards you. i also enjoyed working with my peers.

What I wish was different

more activities

Advice

this job requires to have a patient, caring, helpful, attentive, and careful personality among many more. It is important to have your eyes on the kids at all times. It is also important to keep them all together and not strayed. For example, while walking to keep them in a tight line close to you. It is best to always be entertaining the kids and engaging with them. This also builds their comfort and liking towards you which not only makes you feel amazing but usually results in them listening to you more.

Camp Unit Leader

May - August 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I enjoy working with kids and watching them grow and learn new things about themselves and other people around them. I also loved getting to work with a team that cared about the camp as much as I do.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish could be different is the hiring process so we make sure we are only taking employees with a strong work ethic and interest in the job.

Advice

Huge piece of advice is that kindness and being polite will get you so far and working with kids really helps you work on being polite and kind in situations where it might be more difficult.

YMCA Camp Counseler

July - August 2019 • Long Island City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed working with the children and staff members at the camp. Working with others in my first semi-official employment really opened my eyes to how important teamwork and efficiency is, especially when there are other people waiting for your completion. Although the younger generation appears to be more of a handful every passing generation, it was somewhat of a blessing and experience working with them. I personally enjoy working with kids.

What I wish was different

There were inconsistency, especially from up the ranks. I've noticed most of the time the summer staff members would have to put everything on hold because the next planned event of the day has been changed last minute.

Advice

Make the best of the situation you are in.

Camp Counselor

June 2017 - August 2020 • Londonderry, NH

What I liked

I really enjoyed the age group that I worked with. Towards the beginning of my YMCA career, I worked with the youngest ages (K-1st). As I grew in the company, I started working with the oldest kids (6th-8th), and I really started to enjoy it.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is "expect the unexpected." This job can throw a lot of curveballs and unprecedented situations, so it is important to never be caught off guard. Always be watching the kids, always be prepared, and always be ready for fun.

What I liked

I've been going to this summer camp since I was a little kid and this year I got to work to make the camp as special for today's kids as it was for me. It was an incredible experience, and I will be returning in the summer of 2020.

Inclusion Leader

June - August 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

Job was easy and fun, working with disabled children really helps not only them, but yourself. I felt a lot better mentally after this job, it was a good way to destress from the school semester.

What I wish was different

I wish that one of the kids didn't have diarrhea in the pool while other kids were swimming in it.

Advice

Have fun with it. The kids will feed off of your energy, so if you aren't energetic, they'll be less and less inclined to behave and listen to instructions. If you're enjoying yourself, they'll have more fun too, which means less time spent calming down crying children.
