Personal Shopper

May 2017 • Manassas, VA

What I liked

Co-Workers became close friends

What I wish was different

Company itself needs to improve. 1: Management is terrible 2: If they don't like you they'll try to find any reason to fire you. 3: Management gets worse by the year. Only thing that keeps me going in the company is my co-workers. I dont want to leave them

Advice

Wal-mart is a good job to make friends and for a summer job. It does not make a lot of money but it is decent money.

Sales Associate

May 2017 • Manville, NJ

What I liked

Having worked at Walmart for more than two years, I love interacting with people from various backgrounds while checking them out at the register. Not only have I worked register, I received partial experience at the customer service desk assisting customers with their product returns since it can be a time-consuming process.

What I wish was different

The fact that there are thousands of Walmart stores internationally, the stores that are located in the United States need to be more efficient in terms of management. Last year, I attended university in North Carolina and worked at nearby Walmart and the customers and fellow employees were incredibly humble and kind. Southern hospitality is a real thing in the south!

Advice

I understand that Walmart has ton of negative reviews in terms of quality of products and overall customer service. However, the one piece of advice I would like to share about my experience working at Walmart is that there is a lot of potential to grow within the company and not just viewed as a regular part-time job for the majority of people. In addition, Walmart is a VERY diverse place to work at. I understand that Loyola is all about diversity on campus, however, since the racial demographics at Loyola University Maryland is on average (between students and faculty) are 73% white, I observed much more diversity in Walmart than I did at Loyola while I attended the university. I have seen ALL different kinds of backgrounds and have had the pleasure of getting to know who they are and what their purpose in life is.

Sales Associate

June - August 2019 • Hueytown, AL

What I liked

I liked the opportunities to learn new tasks and when I was given the freedom to go about tasks in my own way. The pay was also pretty solid, especially on the weeks where I worked 40+ hours.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been there a little bit longer to rise through positions more. There was also a lack of accountability for workers who failed to do their jobs, which gave the people willing to work hard and go the extra mile a more difficult time.

Advice

Go into it with the expectation of doing repetitive tasks, but with the attitude of a hard worker and the willingness to perform your tasks in the most efficient way. That will make you stand out to management, which opens up your opportunities within the company even more.

Cashier

March 2018 - September 2019 • Seekonk, MA

What I liked

Schedules are very flexible you can work anywhere from 4-34 hours a week and the pay in MA is not bad. Walmart offers bonuses to all employees quarterly depending on your average hours.

What I wish was different

The workplace at Walmart is very linear you learn to do one thing and it can be extremely boring.

Advice

This is a great job for 6mo-1y but anything more begins to make you hate your job with a passion, you quickly learn everything and the job feels too simple. My advice: great for a summer job but think hard if you want to stay.

Cashier

July - September 2019 • Mesa, AZ

What I liked

The customers were very nice and once they saw you regularly some would give hugs and just be happy to see you in general.

What I wish was different

I wish management was different. Communication was almost nonexistent. Someone can be a great, even an amazing, employee, but that doesn’t always mean they will be a great manager or supervisor so, just be aware that.

Advice

Patience really is key. Sometimes people don’t move as fast as you or you don’t move as fast as someone else and that’s okay.

Photo Lab Sales Associate

June 2017 - October 2019 • Richland Center, WI

What I liked

Working with other people and most definitely helping the elderly that had a hard time operating our kiosks.

What I wish was different

I wish my leaving of Walmart wasn’t so hateful in the last month of me being there, I had to deal with running three different departments all while working alone when it was a two-three person job.

Advice

If you go into this career be prepared to be yelled at by impatient customers and be prepared to do things that you weren’t told to do.
