What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

It's very simple to be completely frank, and I was way more nervous than I should have been throughout the entire thing. Employers aren't as scary as people think, and if you get rejected, it's easy to move on.

Walmart Cashier

July - August 2019 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I liked having a steady and dependable job. I also worked with two of my brothers.

What I wish was different

The teamwork. You don't get to know the other cashiers very well because you clock in and the stand behind your own register for four hours while every other cashier does the same, so there wasn't a lot of time get to know each other and form any sort of work "family". In the end I was offered a position at another company not even a month after starting at Walmart. I now work at A.C.Moore where I know my fellow coworkers much better. It offers a more friendly environment and I look forward to go to work 'cause I know I have friends there.

Advice

Wear good shoes, take your breaks outside (the breakroom is stifling) and ask for Sundays off. Having that little bit of a weekend does wonders.

Electronics Associate

June - August 2019 • Raynham, MA

What I liked

I'm a social person so I really liked interacting with the customers and fellow workers, as it gave me the energy to continue on with the day.

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn't been moved into such isolated sections, it decreased my motivation and made the day drag on.

Advice

Definitely go in with the mindset to make everyone's day better, I always do so it was easily and enjoyable. Just try your best to help others, whether it be your co-workers, bosses, or customers.

Stocker

May - October 2019 • Heber City, UT

What I liked

Walmart has a Educational Time Off (ETO) program that allows employees with good standing to remain employed while taking extended breaks away from work to attend any school activities. While taking time away from actively working at Walmart, an employee on ETO can retain their benefits, keep their seniority, and continue to earn regularly scheduled pay raises.

What I wish was different

I should have either taken more overtime or cut my hours. Walmart management has a tendency to take advantage of part-time associates by scheduling them full time (40 hours) without providing the company's additional full-time benefits.

Advice

Take advantage of the Educational Time Off program at Walmart by working between semesters.

What I liked

I get to help people in their most distress moments while shopping.

What I wish was different

I would change the lack of communication between managers and their employees.

Advice

Customer service is a great place to see how it’s like to able to help others, but can be tricky and my advice would be to treat each customer with a good attitude and a smile always.

May 2018 - August 2019 • Sturgeon Bay, WI

What I liked

I liked how flexible they were about when I would work.

What I wish was different

I wish I would not have had to work every weekend. I understand that this is part of being in retail but it would have been nice to get a couple of weekends off to spend with family and friends.

Advice

I would recommend gaining as much knowledge as possible. I liked being trained in multiple parts of the store that way I could help out where ever my managers needed me.
