Cashier

July 2019 • Lafayette, CO

What I liked

Ease of entry to the position.

What I wish was different

Promptness of management to respond to job application, ability of managers to properly schedule work times, internal cohesiveness of management, transparency about wages and inflexible scheduling.

Advice

Wal-mart is not a bad work experience on its own. The most detrimental aspect of my time there has been the incompetence of management. Otherwise, it is what it is: repetitive, consistent retail work.

Sales Associate

August 2018 • Kennesaw, GA

What I liked

I'm not very fond of this job but i like that it allows me to pay rent and keep food on the table.

What I wish was different

Management, work load, employee treatment and expectations, pay, ability to unionize, etc.

Advice

Walmart is a company that does not really care about its employees and they will look to overwork you and underpay you as much as they can. I recommend this job to anyone who needs some sort of income that is better than fast food but if you can work at some other place that respects its employees and pays them a livable wage, I would recommend you go for that instead.

Associate

May 2019 • King George, VA

What I liked

Great managers, clean environment. Messes were dealt with promptly. Customers are understanding when one is a new employee. Taught decently.

What I wish was different

I kept finding out tips of things that feel important enough to be included in training, but was not. Could not always communicate with the managers, and apparently they have a hard time communicating with different departments. I wish they'd be able to message us back at our terminals. Sometimes coworkers would just not listen to a manager, and then a thing would not get done. That was annoying to deal with.

Advice

Be a good listener, and don't talk back or question what your manager asks you to do. Usually, there's a method to their madness.

Cashier

May 2018 • Biddeford, ME

What I liked

Lots of hours, had some great coworkers, made some money

What I wish was different

I wish we were better-staffed during the busy times of the day. When everyone gets out of work and goes grocery shopping from 5-8pm we always got slammed on the registers. This could have been avoided if the "computer" making the schedule changed its algorithm.

Advice

Working at Walmart is only as good as you make it! Stay positive, keep yourself busy (there is always stuff to do!) and interact with people. I know for a fact I have saved people's lives working as a Walmart cashier and that is something I am pretty proud of. I've got a lot of stories to tell but won't tell them all here.

Self Checkout Host

October 2018 • Cheektowaga, NY

What I liked

Customer service! A lot of people have always complained about a service job, but I found that I enjoyed assisting customers and putting smiles on their faces. Furthermore, I feel more integrated in the community since most locals frequent the store. Over the summer, I switched positions from Front End Cashier to Self Checkout Host and am in the middle of training for Money Center and the Customer Service Desk for future positions.

What I wish was different

A better communication system that didn't require direct contact at the store. Unfortunately, I called off a couple of days for personal reasons and the lack of email or other electronically delivered information made communication with administration difficult.

Advice

Keep an open mind, and do your best! That way, you can work with a clear mind and not let the smallest of slights ruin your day.

What I wish was different
